The Colorful Morgan

For the longest, I thought that Morgans only came in about 3 colors. Bay, Chestnut and brownish/blackish. Most of the Morgans I had ever seen in my earlier days had minimal white as well. We did have one horse in our barn, named JJ, that was a deep reddish chestnut with 3 white feet and a blaze. I always admired the way he shined like a copper penny in the summer sunlight. I think he is the reason that my ultimate dream "Morgan" horse is a bright red chestnut with lots and lots of white. Unfortunately, they're still kind of hard to find. Not impossible by any means, but not common either.

In the mid 90's, J got very interested in expanding her herd to colorful Morgans. I know that if you follow Fugly, you may be rolling your eyes. However, J is also a very diligent breeder in overall quality, and she does not nor has she ever bred just to breed. Here is one of the buckskin foals born on her farm in 2004, I think.

Currently, J has quite a few palominos and one buckskin. She also has a double registered Pinto (or is it Paint)/Morgan; who is actually a splash white.

There are people who are against breeding Morgans with color. They prefer the traditional bay, brown, chestnut and black. I personally like to see a little white on a Morgan. Perhaps it will help the Morgan appeal to a larger group of people as well. I still like my beautiful bays, but there's just something about some extra white on a horse, especially on a beautiful Morgan horse, that makes me just WANT one!

There was another "pinto" Morgan born this spring down in Georgia (I mean spotted, not just high stockings and wide blaze). You can find the story of her birth and a picture here http://gaitedmorgansinfo.com/news.php

Those last two pics are of Ultras Brite Lites. She's owned by Mary Brannon of Willowick Farm... The same farm where Shaker's Sierra used to stand :)

I love all of the horses pictured as well. That white!! My favorite is actually of the first horse pictured. I've actually shown in a class with him, and he is stunning in person. If you click on Erin's link, you'll see an adorable little pinto filly. She really is full blown pinto!!

Angie - I am so happy you came across this blog. I hope to see you start up again! Actually, years ago I did a search for "Shaker" and came across your webpage. I saw that at one time you owned one of his foals. I hope to hear more from you. By the way, I worry about posting "other peoples" pics on this blog. If there is a problem, I will remove them ASAP!

The first horse I learned to ride on was half-Morgan and half-Arab. They really are stunning. I've always loved liver chestnuts.
