Lazy Blogger, Horse and Bopping Bob

Miss Lazy Pantaloons - this is my mom on her horse just after we finished bleaching out a pigeon poop infested indoor arena.

I've been such a lazy biscuit about blogging lately. Part of the reason is just this winter blah that's kind of put my horse riding on hold; and the other part of it is simply my laziness on uploading new horse pictures.

Here is an update on my mom's horse Lady. Last weekend we went up to ride her and she was just as naughty as can be. Although she's a sweet mare, willing and steady, she's not a fan of moving. She will walk at a snail's pace 'till the day is done, however any faster and she's just not into it. She will oblige with a toss of the head and a flick of the tail which is something my mom is correcting. Last weekend, there was snow on the ground and a bite in the frosty air. Lady was feeling good and instead of her usual putz pace, she was a little speed demon. Well, I should say she was a speed demon when she spooked, wheeled around, bucked and took off like a blaze of glory with my mom scrambling holding on for dear life in the saddle. After that little episode, Lady settled right back down into her usual turtle gear. I think Lady was saying "Hey lady, I'm built for speed! I'm a speed demon in hiding. I choose not to move, but you better bet I can!"

Of course, Lady's outburst made me nervous. I know my mom is a capable rider, but she will not wear a helmet, and has never had formal lessons!!! I know what you're thinking too, believe me, I'm right there with you! Now, my mom can stick a horse and has been riding wild things her whole life, but she's not 18 anymore and I don't know how to get it through her thick skull that helmets are life savers. No horse is a sure thing, as Lady so dutifully proved last weekend. This horse seems to be very nice, however she was given to my mom. My mom doesn't really know her history nor does she know the horse that well yet. If the horse hasn't really been worked hard, I know that Lady's little outburst last week is just the tip of the iceberg, especially when it occurs to her that my mom on her back = work. There are going to be quite a few tantrums thrown by this lazy mare as my mom gets her working more and more, I feel it in my booooones...yikes!

As for me, I rode Bob and Contro a few weeks ago when a prospective buyer came to check them out. Of course, Contro was absolutely fabulous, but Bob - - - oooooh Bob - - - -that horse lives to embarrass me! Orrrrr, is it me embarrassing me? Anyway, Bob felt it was very necessary to bop around in the canter transitions. When I mean bop around, I mean he has this series of bucks that he does just as he transitions from the walk to the canter - - - it's like walk walk walk, canter canter BOP BOP BOP canter BOP canter BOP BOP! Ugh, not in front of prospectives Bob! The worst part is that after his little episode with me, the Jr. exhibitor rider that was looking hopped up, and he was a perfect gent. I just told myself that I smoothed out his wrinkles for her :), I'm glad he didn't buck her, as a side note.

Sir Naughty Britches - Unlike Lady, this guy can boogie.

A Better Option?

As I've mentioned before in earlier posts, I am seriously considering the purchase of a horse come Spring. Initially I was under the impression that with my tight budget, I wasn't going to be able to get much. I figured it would be a young horse untrained, or a trail quality horse that I wouldn't be able to show. Well, I posted a request on one of my favorite Morgan Horse websites and the response was overwhelming. My budget (or goal) is to spend less than $2,000.00 on a horse. Well, here is one that I am very seriously considering....
She's an 8 year old Morgan Mare, 15'1" hands. Her owner sadly suffered a stroke severe enough to limit his horse time, so he and his friend have made the heart breaking decision to sell her. Addy (the horse) is broke to ride and drive, has been lightly shown and has spent her last year in a pasture. Because the horse market is so dire right now and the need to downsize like, NOW, they are selling her for a ridiculous sum...a sum so low, well, it makes me wonder what's the catch. No matter though, I spoke with her owner and have made tentative plans to go see her after the holidays. If she has sold by then, it just wasn't meant to be I guess. Isn't she cute?
